This production of Alban Berg’s Lulu will be performed at the Teatro dell’Opera, Rome’s historic opera house, and will have English and Italian lyrics written above the stage to help you follow along with the original German.

Lulu takes place during the late 19th century in Vienna, Paris, and London. The protagonist, Lulu, is a desperate woman who does what she must to survive. The opera is quite scandalous as Lulu assumes various identities, marries multiple men, commits murder, and winds up killed at the hands of Jack the Ripper.

Despite its tragedy, this opera is almost always considered the best of the 20th century. The work is a societal critique in which Lulu is victim of the pressures placed on her from the world. The main reoccurring theme to keep in mind throughout the performance is the idea of palindromes, which are present in the music and actions of the opera.

This opera is famous for being performed incomplete for over 40 years until the late 1970s when the third act was finally completed based on Berg’s preliminary work for the act. The opera is a unique blend of music, silent film, and visual art.
