Così fan tutte is a two act opera buffa, or comic opera, in Italian and was first performed in 1790. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote the opera music while Lorenzo Da Ponte wrote the libretto. This production will have the Italian and English lyrics written above the stage to help you follow along.

This opera explores relationship dynamics through comedy and plays on the theme of “fiancée swapping”, made famous by Shakespeare and Boccaccio. While passing time in a coffee shop, Don Alfonso, Guglielmo, and Ferrando decide to wager on the fidelity of their fiancées. Don Alfonso is convinced that Fiordiligi, Guglielmo’s fiancée, and Dorabella, Ferrando’s fiancée, will readily cheat on their lovers given the opportunity.

Guglielmo and Ferrando tell Fiordiligi and Dorabella that they have been called away to war. The pair of friends then dress up as “Albanians” and try to tempt the women to forget their lovers and to fall in love with them in disguise. Behind the scenes, Don Alfonso convinces the girls’ maid, Despina, to join in on the hoax. Will Dorabella and Fiordiligi give in to their carnal desires; or will they remain faithful to Ferrando and Guglielmo?
