Join the Studio Art and Design Club for a night at the Opera and admire the extravagant beauty of the sets and costumes of the Turandot!

This is an opera in three acts, with music by Giacomo Puccini and Italian libretto by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni. Turandot was premiered after Puccini's death (thus requiring completion by Franco Alfano) on 25 April 1926 at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

The action unfolds in millennial China and narrates the story of the cruel princess Turandot, who, in order to avenge one of her ancestors, challenges her suitors to answer three riddles, decapitating them if they fail. An unknown prince, Calaf, answers correctly and, in turn, he challenges her to guess his name. Turandot gives the order that nobody must sleep in Peking until the suitor's name is discovered. After all the bloodshed there is a happy ending with powerful emotional resonance.

The Chinese artist Ai Weiwei designed the sets and costumes for the production; Ai says that he only accepted the Roman opera house's offer because Turandot has special significance. As a penniless artist trying to make his way in New York, Ai and his half-brother appeared as extras in a seminal production of Puccini’s work at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1987, directed by Franco Zeffirelli.
