See a side of Italy that is off the beaten path where the people are known for their hospitality, cuisine, and beautiful seaside.

Bari is the capital city of the southern Italian region of Puglia (located at the “heel” of the boot). It is a port town located on the Adriatic Sea. Bari’s religious centers include 2 important churches, the Basilica of Saint Nicholas and the Bari Cathedral. Wheat is one of their most important products of the region and you can find many different types of breads and pastas, most notably orecchiette, or ear-shaped pasta that is typical of the region.

Alberobello is best known for its unique homes known as trulli. These buildings are made of limestone and have cone shaped roofs. They could either be temporary buildings or permanent homes. This type of constructions is thousands of years old, however, the oldest preserved examples at Alberobello are from about 1000 AD. The trulli are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The town of Altamura is home to one of Puglia’s most important churches dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin which was constructed by Emperor Frederick II in 1232. Altamura has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, but was rebuilt during Emperor Frederick’s reign.

In the region of Basilicata, we will visit Matera, famous for the ancient part of the town known as the “Sassi di Matera” which are cave dwellings that are thousands of years old, in which people still live today. The “Sassi” are also a UNESCO World Heritage site and are recognizable as the setting for many famous films including Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ and Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman.
