Explore the island of Sicily with John Cabot University during Spring Break. The island is famous for its culture, cuisine, architecture, and the hospitality of its people. Various empires throughout its history, such as the Greeks, Romans, Muslim and Byzantine Empires, have conquered Sicily, contributing to its cultural and artistic richness.

This trip focuses on the western portion of the island, as we will be staying in Sicily’s capital city of Palermo.

Palermo is the largest city in Sicily and one of the largest in Italy. It is located on the northwestern coast of the island. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing 2 palaces, 3 churches, a cathedral, and a bridge within the city as well as other churches in nearby towns.  Palermo was founded in 734 BC and has been under the control of many different empires and countries, which have left their mark on the culture, art, and cuisine of the city.

Mondello, borough of Palermo, has become an important tourist destination thanks to its picturesque seafront. The town is famous for its beautiful mosaics.

Monreale is situated just half an hour outside the center of Palermo. Its main cathedral is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Palermo and is an excellent example of Norman architecture.

The final location included in this UNESCO World Heritage site is the cathedral of Cefalù. The town is notable for its Norman architecture. Cefalù is also a popular vacation spot as it is located on the northern coast of Sicily and known for its beaches and crystal clear water.

Agrigento is home to Valle dei Templi (in English Valley of the Temples), a Greek archeological site located on the southern half of Sicily and is the final UNESCO World Heritage site that will be visited during this trip. Valle dei Templi showcases 7 nearly perfectly preserved Doric style temples. This archeological site is notable for being one of the largest in the world.
