Food, Art, and  Sustainability

Villa Vallerosa, Selci Sabino

Description

The vast artistic culture that Italy provides us is based on a sustainable model of food production. This security has allowed an exploration in visual culture of art making, both in materials and imagery. Often, the materials for cooking and painting are the same materials.

This excursion is an introduction to sustainability, and how environmental conditions have formed the cultural history of Italy, in particular in the relationship between local and seasonal produce, both cultivated and foraged, and the manufacture of art materials such as pigments and tools. Through a series of lectures and workshops, students will be exposed to elements of sustainable food production and their use in the kitchen and in the artist’s studio.

The excursion consists of various workshops where students will engage in making bread and cheese, olive oil tasting, making paper, pens, and ink, and drawing and cooking. The goal is to sensitize students to the origin of resources, both spontaneous and cultivated, and how they have contributed to creation and maintenance of civilization in central Italy, through sustenance and artistic production.

Location

The excursion will take place at Villa Vallerosa, in Selci Sabino, an 18th century villa, working farm and agriturismo.

The Sabina region has been known for millennia as a rich agricultural resource for Rome, though trade on the Tiber River, and as a cultural passage between the capital and Umbrian cities like Perugia. The area is littered with Roman villas and medieval hamlets and churches from the 10th century on. Today it is known for its agricultural production, in particular DOC olive oil. Students stay in shared apartments with kitchens, and have use of a work space, common spaces, the farm, pool, and wifi. Restaurants, shopping (pharmacy, ATM, grocery) are walking distance from the villa. All meals will be provided at the villa.
