This trip focuses on two important memorials of World War II both in and out of Rome. The day starts with a guided tour of the Museo della Liberazione. The building which hosts this museum is a powerful representation of the traumatic effects of the war because it was once a prison which held both military and civilians during the Nazi occupation of Rome from 1943 to 1944. In addition to being a memorial to the prisoners who were detained and often tortured there, the museum honors the resistance of Italian antifascists who fought alongside the Allied troops. After the war, Princess Josepha Ruspoli in Savorgnan di Brazzà donated 4 apartments that had been used by the SS during the occupation specifying that it be used as a memorial for the atrocities that had occurred there.

 

While the morning will center on the impact of the Nazi occupation in Rome and the antifascist struggle, the afternoon will commemorate the sacrifice that the Allied soldiers made to liberate Italy.  This part of the trip will take us south of Rome to Nettuno, where both American and British troops invaded during Operation Shingle on Jan. 22, 1944: it took another four and a half months before they reached Rome on June 4th. The US soldiers that sacrificed their lives in this campaign, which had begun with the July 1943 landing in Sicily, have been buried at the Sicily-Rome Cemetery. There are over 7,800 of them who are laid to rest at this cemetery today. We will have privilege to assist in the flag lowering at the end of the day.
