Frasassi Caves are a very popular destination for all cave lovers and nature lovers. They are one of the most beautiful sights in Italy and are considered the largest hypogeal complex in Europe. These Caves are characterized by a set of underground paths of about 30 km in length, divided into 8 different geological layers.

There are different forms of stalactites and stalagmites, secular limestone concentrations.

The caves are open to the public for only 1.5 of the total 30km and the temperature never exceeds 14 °C.

The Frasassi Caves are managed by Frasassi Consortium, established in 1972, by the collaboration between the province of Ancona and the municipality of Genga, so as to safeguard and enhance this natural site.

After the Caves, we will visit the Valadier’s Temple, a church of Genga which Pope Leo XII built in 1828, on the basis of a draft drawn by the architect Giuseppe Valadier. The church was built in Travertine and has an octagon shape plant, a domed roof covered with lead sheets and is placed in the cave.

A copy of the marble statue of the Madonna and Child by Antonio Canova is located inside the temple. The real one is kept inside the “Museo di Arte Sacra” di Genga.
