Anyone who sees Matera cannot help but be awe-struck, so expressive and touching is its sorrowful beauty. (C. Levi)

On 17 October 2014, at the end of the intense candidacy period and following the evaluation made by the international panel of judges, Dario Franceschini, Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and of Tourism, proclaimed Matera the European Capital of Culture for 2019. Matera is best known for its extensive cave-dwelling districts, the “Sassi”, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The Sassi provide a stunning backdrop of stairways and narrow lanes, cave-houses carved out of the rock, rock churches with beautiful frescoes and elegant buildings. We will visit the Park of the Rupestrian Churches, which consists of more than 150 rock churches dated from the Paleolithic, and soaking in their ancient spirituality. The cultural traditions of Puglia will embrace us while we walk into the city, also savoring culinary delights and getting to know the charming locals. We will enjoy all this beauty guided by a skilled and local tourist guide, wandering into narrow paths to reach hidden gems, until we reach the heart of this enchanting city.
