Description:

Frasassi Caves and surroundings: Among the most beautiful Karst complexes in Italy and the largest in Europe, these grottoes are a magical world of colors, a labyrinth of chambers, tunnels, halls, steps, small crystalline lakes, alabaster stalactites formed about 1,4 million years ago, and unknown in its magnificent infinity until some decades ago. Amid the irregular scenario of the Apennine mountains lies one of the main speleological sites in Europe, inside the uncontaminated nature of a Regional Park, a complex system of caves rising over a deep canyon, where the pure waters slowly flow and continue to feed the chemical and erosion processes which make of this marvelous site a living environment, with formations growing according to the slow calendar of geological time.

San Vicino: The reserve, which is characterized by formations of massive limestone of the upper Trias, includes in addition to the M. San Vicino (1.045 m) also the plateau of Canfaito located on the slopes.
Landscape value is linked to the presence of a flat ridge area, from the relatively large wooded areas, alternated with pastures, which together constitute a particularly sweet and harmonious landscape, even if of anthropic origin.
Also important are the anthropological and archaeological values given by caves, ravines and sub-rock shelters inhabited since prehistoric times and in which ancient stone tools and tools were also found.
The vegetation is instead formed by large beech-woods reduced to copse, in which however there are also old specimens (up to 6 m in circumference). These true patriarchs of nature, have been saved from the cuts because the shepherds, during the hot hours of the summer months, they took refuge there seeking shelter among their large foliage (merigge).
From the faunistic point of view it is important to remember the presence of the wolf, roe deer, wild cat, eagle owl, peregrine falcon and red woodpecker.
