COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is a first introduction to the study of the Latin language. The course introduces all forms of nouns and pronouns in the five declensions and all tenses of the verb in the indicative and imperative. It emphasizes vocabulary development and the acquisition of reading skills in Latin prose. Assignments include considerable reading of continuous passages and translation from Latin to English and English to Latin. Attention is also given to Latin proverbs, abbreviations and cognates in English.
SUMMARY OF COURSE CONTENT:

All forms of the noun in five declensions, singular and plural.

All forms of the verb in the indicative of four conjuagions, singular and plural. 

Approximately 1,500 vocabulary words.

Propositions and pronouns

Readings from Roman authors (Eutropius, Inscriptions, Proverbs)

Historic, political, linguistic and social context of the Latin language

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Ability to read and translate accurately Latin paragraphs at the advanced-beginning level.

Proficiency in Latin structures and syntax as outlined in course content above

Familiarity with the cultural contexts of the Latin language especially in the Classical period.

ACADEMIC HONESTY
As stated in the university catalog, any student who commits an act of academic dishonesty will receive a failing grade on the work in which the dishonesty occurred. In addition, acts of academic dishonesty, irrespective of the weight of the assignment, may result in the student receiving a failing grade in the course. Instances of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Academic Affairs. A student who is reported twice for academic dishonesty is subject to summary dismissal from the University. In such a case, the Academic Council will then make a recommendation to the President, who will make the final decision.
