COURSE DESCRIPTION:

French 201 is a continuation of FR 102 and is built for those who can communicate with ease using sentence-length discourse in asking and answering simple questions.

This course focuses on consolidating the student’s ability to use French effectively, emphasis is given to grammar and vocabulary expansion and to the development of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Students will begin linking sentences together in the present, past and future time frames as they are supposed to be familiar with all the indicative tenses (that will be reviewed through the course anyway) Students will train to work on the four skills used by the European Framework for Languages (reading, listening, speaking and understanding) to evaluate the level B1 that should be reached by the end of the semester. Students will also begin to read relatively complex texts, to write paragraph-length texts using high-frequency vocabulary and structures and approach French culture in the French-speaking world (through cinema, art, literature, poetry and TV programs).  Grammar topics include a review of all basic structures, present future and past tenses and will approach the subjunctive, the conditional, and complex sentences.

SUMMARY OF COURSE CONTENT:

The course is designed to study in-depth the following grammar points: verb tenses in the indicative and subjunctive moods, sequence of tenses, relative pronouns, and the use of prepositions and conjunctions.  It concentrates on consolidating specific communicative tasks, including stating opinions and constructing hypotheses, in both speaking and writing.  Specialized vocabulary is expanded and appropriate variables in register are introduced in expository writing and conversation.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Reading, conversation and oral comprehension are the basic aims of this course, which is structured around contemporary texts, French TV programs, art, poetry and literature.

In this course, you will improve your French skills, adding to your previous work in the language.

The class will be conducted entirely (or almost entirely) in French as we develop all four skills of the language:  listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
The program will be following the DELF program and you will reach the level B1 of the European framework for Languages at the end of the course.

BThis is highly competent level of performance and directly addresses the question or problem raised. There is a demonstration of some ability to critically evaluatetheory and concepts and relate them to practice. Discussions reflect the student’s own arguments and are not simply a repetition of standard lecture andreference material. The work does not suffer from any major errors or omissions and provides evidence of reading beyond the required assignments.
CThis is an acceptable level of performance and provides answers that are clear but limited, reflecting the information offered in the lectures and reference readings.
DThis level of performances demonstrates that the student lacks a coherent grasp of the material.Important information is omitted and irrelevant points included. In effect, the student has barely done enough to persuade the instructor that s/he should not fail.
FThis work fails to show any knowledge or understanding of the issues raised in the question. Most of the material in the answer is irrelevant.

-ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Students are expected to come prepared to class and participate in all activities. Active participation is crucial, since the learning process requires considerable practice.  Regular attendance is an essential component of class participation.  Students are allowed three unjustified absences.  The final grade will be lowered by 2 points for each additional absence.

Please refer to the university catlog for the attendance and absence policy.
