COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course focuses on consolidating the student’s ability to use Italian effectively. Emphasis is given to grammar review and vocabulary expansion
SUMMARY OF COURSE CONTENT:

Italian 201, which is conducted solely in Italian, is designed to review and study in-depth the following grammar points

  • pronomi personali diretti, indiretti e combinati, pronomi e aggettivi possessivi, aggettivi comparativi e superlativi, differenza tra imperfetto e passato prossimo, condizionale semplice (Review);
trapassato prossimo, futuro, condizionale passato (o composto), congiuntivo presente e passato, indicativo vs. congiuntivo, imperativo, verbi impersonali, aggettivi e pronomi indefiniti (in-depth).
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon completing this course, students will possess the ability to:

  • Understand written and spoken Italian at the intermediate level
  • Participate in conversations on a variety of topics using present, past, conditional, future and some subjunctive tenses
  • Ask for and obtain information

Express opinions, feelings, needs, approval and disapproval    

  • Comprehend the general meaning and details of intermediate level texts.

Produce brief texts on a variety of topics using present, past, future, conditional, imperative

-ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Students are supposed to come prepared to class and participate in all activities. Active participation is crucial, since the learning process requires considerable practice. Regular attendance is an essential component of class participation. Students are allowed two absences. The final grade will be lowered by 1 point for each additional absence. Make sure your travel plans do not interfere with the class schedule.

Two late entrances count as one absence.

MAKE-UPS

Individual arrangements for make-ups will be done only for students with medical emergencies or any other valid reasons. The Final Exam can only be made up with approval from the Dean of Academic Affairs (Please see the John Cabot University Catalogue and Student Handbook).

ACADEMIC HONESTY
As stated in the university catalog, any student who commits an act of academic dishonesty will receive a failing grade on the work in which the dishonesty occurred. In addition, acts of academic dishonesty, irrespective of the weight of the assignment, may result in the student receiving a failing grade in the course. Instances of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Academic Affairs. A student who is reported twice for academic dishonesty is subject to summary dismissal from the University. In such a case, the Academic Council will then make a recommendation to the President, who will make the final decision.

Week 2 –  Unit 2- Review : Past Tense. Review direct and indirect pronouns; reflexive pronouns; possessives adjectives.

Week 3 -  Unit 3- Describe people, and make comparisons: use comparative and superlative adjectives

Week 4 – Test 1.  Unit 4 – Express desire, hope, ask and give recommendations, and suggestions.  Form and use of present conditional

Week 5 – Unit 4 – Present conditional; combined pronouns. Use of ne

Week 6 – Unit 5 – Learn body parts and Italian gestures. Express opinions. Form and use of present subjunctive

Week 7 – Test 2. Unit 6- Talk about labour market. Learn how to write a curriculum vitae in Italian. Indefinite pronouns.

Week 8 – Unit 6 – Form and use of Informal imperative with pronouns.

 MIDTERM

Week 9 – Unit 6 - Use of Trapassato prossimo in past sentences.

Oral presentation

Week 10 – Unit 7 – Read Italian newspapers; talk about future plans. Form and use of simple future.

Week 11 – Unit 7- read Italian newspapers; use of perfect conditional .

Week 12 – Unit 7-  Extension use of present subjunctive.  Test 3

Week 13 – Unit 8 – Formal imperative; introduction past subjunctive

Week 14 – Final composition – Review for final exam
