COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides an introduction to Thermodynamics, a branch of physics concerned with heat and temperature and their relation to energy and work. It defines macroscopic variables, such as internal energy, entropy, and pressure that partly describe a body of matter or radiation. It states that the behavior of those variables is subject to general constraints that are common to all materials, not the peculiar properties of particular materials. These general constraints are expressed in the four laws of thermodynamics, which can be explained by statistical mechanics, in terms of the microscopic constituents. The course includes basic elements of classical thermodynamics, including first and second laws, properties of pure materials, ideal gas law, reversibility and irreversibility, and Carnot cycle; control volume analysis of closed simple systems and open systems at steady state; engineering applications, including cycles; psychrometrics.
SUMMARY OF COURSE CONTENT:
Fundamentals of classical thermodynamics, including first and second laws, properties of pure materials, ideal gas law, reversibility and irreversibility, Carnot cycle and heat pump; control volume analysis of closed simple systems and open systems at steady state; engineering applications; psychrometrics.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
On successful completion of this course the student will be able to
1. be familiar with the basic concepts and definitions used in the study of thermodynamics
2. learn the properties of pure, simple, compressible substances and the property relationships relevant to engineering thermodynamics
3. understand macroscopic and microscopic modes of energy, energy transfer and energy transformations
4. understand the basic laws of classical thermodynamics for open and closed systems
5. know some important thermodynamic cycles and their applications

You cannot make-up a major exam (midterm or final) without the permission of the Dean’s Office. The Dean’s Office will grant such permission only when the absence was caused by a serious impediment, such as a documented illness, hospitalization or death in the immediate family (in which you must attend the funeral) or other situations of similar gravity. Absences due to other meaningful conflicts, such as job interviews, family celebrations, travel difficulties, student misunderstandings or personal convenience, will not be excused. Students who will be absent from a major exam must notify the Dean’s Office prior to that exam. Absences from class due to the observance of a religious holiday will normally be excused. Individual students who will have to miss class to observe a religious holiday should notify the instructor by the end of the Add/Drop period to make prior arrangements for making up any work that will be missed. ACADEMIC HONESTY
As stated in the university catalog, any student who commits an act of academic dishonesty will receive a failing grade on the work in which the dishonesty occurred. In addition, acts of academic dishonesty, irrespective of the weight of the assignment, may result in the student receiving a failing grade in the course. Instances of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Academic Affairs. A student who is reported twice for academic dishonesty is subject to summary dismissal from the University. In such a case, the Academic Council will then make a recommendation to the President, who will make the final decision.
