COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course offers an introduction to the manager’s role and the management process of decision making in the context of organizations and society. The focus of the course is on effective management of the corporation in a changing society and on improved decision making and communication. It introduces the processes of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, and it emphasizes the importance of teamwork and individual participation.
SUMMARY OF COURSE CONTENT:

This course covers the nuts and bolts of management with the aim of forging successful management practitioners. However, its aim not only produce managers that are competent, but managers who are also prepared to assume a positive role in our society and on our planet, and to do so ethically, responsibly, and sustainably – in short, professional managers for the 21st century.

The course covers the basic management frameworks and practices, using the POLC framework: planning, organisation, leadership and control. It covers decision making, communication, strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship, individual and team motivation, presenting not only the ‘classic’ tried and tested concepts and contents, but up-to-date insights into the frontiers and fringes of knowledge.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

·         Critically analyse and challenge traditional management frameworks;

·         Appreciate how management concepts work in practice;

Discussions reflect the student’s own arguments and are not simply a repetition of standard lecture andreference material. The work does not suffer from any major errors or omissions and provides evidence of reading beyond the required assignments.
CThis is an acceptable level of performance and provides answers that are clear but limited, reflecting the information offered in the lectures and reference readings.
DThis level of performances demonstrates that the student lacks a coherent grasp of the material.Important information is omitted and irrelevant points included.In effect, the student has barely done enough to persuade the instructor that s/he should not fail.
