COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course focuses both on the creation of photographs and on their presentation in book format. A photo-book is a book in which the primary message is carried by photographs; through its design and the choice of its images the book is itself an expressive artistic medium. The course examines the contemporary status of the photo-book as well as the rich history of the medium. It explores the processes of creating a personal photographic vision, and guides students in producing a final collaborative photo-book.
SUMMARY OF COURSE CONTENT:
This course is designed to introduce the students to the production of a photo book/ Portfolio. In this course, the students will acquire a high degree of proficiency in editing/designing/sequencing a photo essay completing an assignment every other week.
Students will create a small body of work which will culminate in the production of a portfolio/ photo book.

- Learn how to work with Indesign
- Learn how to edit and sequence images
- Learn how to pair images on a layout 
- Develop the practical and intellectual skills to make a photo essay

-ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
AWork of this quality shows excellent mastery of the course content along with exceptional levels of technical skill, artistic awareness, originality, resourcefulness, commitment, quantity of work and improvement. There has been excellent collaboration and leadership in group projects, and there have been no attendance problems.
BA highly competent level of performance with work that directly addresses the content of the course, with a good quantity of work produced.
CAn acceptable level of performance: the work shows awareness of the course content, but is very limited in quantity, quality, commitment and skill.
DThe student lacks a coherent grasp of the course material and has failed to produce much work.
FNegligent in attendance, academic honesty, engagement with the course content, or production of work.

-ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Session 1: Introduction - Presentations of each student’s and professor’s photographic work.

Session 2: Photo Book: An Historical Overview

Session 3: Mini Photo Essay 1 / Practice sessions. 

Session 4: Field trip. Visit to a Photo Bookshop. Time and Place to be defined.

Session 5: Editing - Sequencing - Pairing / Practice sessions.

Session 6: Mini Photo Essay 2 / Practice sessions.

Session 7: Mid-term Exam to evaluate knowledge taken during first half of the course

Session 8: Technical Focus Indesign + Final Book Project Launch

Session 9: Planning the final Book Project (conceptual ideas, inspirations)

Session 10: Layout examples / Practice sessions.

Session 11: Present Layout Ideas

Session 12: Field trip. Visit to an exhibition. Time and Place to be defined. Students should pay for their own entry to exhibitions.

Session 13: Editing / Sequencing / Pairing /  Final Project 

Session 14: Editing / Sequencing / Pairing /  Final Project 

Session 15: Session Completion of the final project. Presentation and review of students’ photographic projects.

ACADEMIC HONESTY
As stated in the university catalog, any student who commits an act of academic dishonesty will receive a failing grade on the work in which the dishonesty occurred. In addition, acts of academic dishonesty, irrespective of the weight of the assignment, may result in the student receiving a failing grade in the course. Instances of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Academic Affairs. A student who is reported twice for academic dishonesty is subject to summary dismissal from the University. In such a case, the Academic Council will then make a recommendation to the President, who will make the final decision.
