COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The objective of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental elements of international business, including political, economic and social systems and barriers affecting international trade and investment, key aspects of global and regional economic integration models, and the global monetary system. The course covers in depth market entry strategies and international organizational structures, reviews key functions of international business and highlights contemporary internationalization problems.
SUMMARY OF COURSE CONTENT:

This course provides a thorough grounding in economic and international business theory. It also covers core concepts of social anthropology, political economy, and management and how these apply to the dynamics and constraints of international business strategy. We will analyze three dimensions of international business – its context and rationale, the external environment, and the firm internal management with an emphasis on foreign operations methods. The course comprises lectures, cases, and exercises from a wide range of countries and cultures, including emerging markets, to help students develop a truly international view of the global marketplace.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Understand the role of globalisation in shaping the business environment, and recognize challenges and opportunities created by the globalisation of business practices.

Apply the appropriate theories and concepts to address business challenges in multicultural environments

Critically evaluate various components of the national and international environments - technological, cultural, economic, political, and legal systems, and their influence on business practices and strategies of the international firm.

Consider the organization and structure of the international firm

Understand different aspects of International Business strategy including global opportunity assessment, entry mode and market selection.

Present ideas with oral proficiency by using the technical vocabulary of management and strategy of the international firm

Class exercisesONE: 15%: Students participate individually and in groups in approximately ten different class activities, including presentations and written assignments. After the student’s participation, he/she summarizes and uploads on Moodle the argument made on the day of contribution/class. Late uploads will not be considered for evaluation. TWO: 15%: Students present in groups a case study. 30%
Midterm and final examStudents take a midterm and a final exam that tests their knowledge and understanding of concepts discussed in the class. You will be assessed on your ability to apply the tools/concepts/frameworks discussed in class. You will find that a sound understanding of the textbook material and case studies, your application of the concepts, and your classroom participation will greatly assist you in taking the exam. The exam may consist of a variety of questions including true or false, multiple choice and open questions.30%
Group projectGroups of students conduct a project during the semester and present it in class at the end of the semester (25 min). Power point presentation slides must be uploaded two (2) days before the presentation date. All group members need to present. 40%

Discussions reflect the student’s own arguments and are not simply a repetition of standard lecture andreference material. The work does not suffer from any major errors or omissions and provides evidence of reading beyond the required assignments.

-ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS AND EXAMINATION POLICY
You cannot make-up a major exam (midterm or final) without the permission of the Dean’s Office. The Dean’s Office will grant such permission only when the absence was caused by a serious impediment, such as a documented illness, hospitalization or death in the immediate family (in which you must attend the funeral) or other situations of similar gravity. Absences due to other meaningful conflicts, such as job interviews, family celebrations, travel difficulties, student misunderstandings or personal convenience, will not be excused. Students who will be absent from a major exam must notify the Dean’s Office prior to that exam. Absences from class due to the observance of a religious holiday will normally be excused. Individual students who will have to miss class to observe a religious holiday should notify the instructor by the end of the Add/Drop period to make prior arrangements for making up any work that will be missed. The final exam period runs until ____________
ACADEMIC HONESTY
As stated in the university catalog, any student who commits an act of academic dishonesty will receive a failing grade on the work in which the dishonesty occurred. In addition, acts of academic dishonesty, irrespective of the weight of the assignment, may result in the student receiving a failing grade in the course. Instances of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Academic Affairs. A student who is reported twice for academic dishonesty is subject to summary dismissal from the University. In such a case, the Academic Council will then make a recommendation to the President, who will make the final decision.
