COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The aim of this course is to give advanced students the theoretical and practical skills necessary to invent and produce a creative photographic project. Projects may fall into traditional genres such as nature photography, architecture, portraiture, fashion, still life/objects/merchandise, photojournalism, landscape, etc., as well as more conceptual approaches. The course assumes the basic competence in black and white photography (including darkroom techniques), and/or expertise in digital photography. Instruction is both on an individual, tutorial level and in group visits, lessons and critiques. The course will help students acquire the technical and artistic competency expected in the professional workplace.
SUMMARY OF COURSE CONTENT:
This is a course in advanced photography composed of 14 sessions.
The sessions will include advanced post-production with applications like Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and RAW processors and exhibition quality printing.
Group critique and portfolio evaluation
The main assignment of this course is the final portfolio. The final portfolio will be presented on the exam day.
The group critique is an important part of this course. Discussing photographs will lead to a better understanding and appreciation of art. The group critique consists of the following elements.
1. Describe the work. What are we looking at?
2. Interpretation of the work. What is the meaning of it? Apply contextual information and subjective interpretation of the work
3. Evaluation of the work. Is it art? Is the message of the work clear? Set criteria for yourself on which base you judge photographic art
4. Concept. What is the idea behind it?
5. Experimentation. Is this something we have seen before? New challenges, risks.

Students will regularly post to Moodle

During this semester we will visit a photographic exhibition. Time and place to be decided.

Independent research is critical for success. Students are expected to write project proposals and critiques.
Although we will not use a textbook, you will get many required readings during this course. Discussions of these readings will take place regularly.
