An introduction to descriptive statistics, elementary probability theory and inferential statistics. Included are: mean, median, mode and standard deviation; probability distributions, binomial probabilities and the normal distribution; problems of estimation; hypothesis testing, and an introduction to simple linear regression.

This course is a self-contained introduction to probability and statistics. It is designed to equip students with a level of statistical proficiency that is an essential part of their critical thinking toolkit. The course presents graphical and numerical techniques for representing data before studying the probability theory needed to conduct statistical analysis. Some of the more commonly used discrete and continuous probability distributions are discussed. The probability theory is used to develop the sampling distributions of point estimators so that  interval estimation and statistical inference can be studied. Hypothesis tests for means, proportions, and variances as well as the differences between these parameters, and goodness of fit tests, are developed. The course concludes with an introduction to simple linear regression and some of its pitfalls and generalizations. Implementation of the statistical techniques studied using computer software is emphasized throughout the course.


Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

- Use statistical core terminology accurately.

- Organise data using both numerical and graphical methods.

- Use measures of central tendency and variability to summarise a data set.

- Calculate probabilities of events using common probability distributions, including the normal.

- Compute point and confidence interval estimates of population parameters.

- Conduct tests of hypotheses about population parameters. 

- Perform simple linear regression and understand its limitations

You cannot make-up a major exam (midterm or final) without the permission of the Dean’s Office. The Dean’s Office will grant such permission only when the absence was caused by a serious impediment, such as a documented illness, hospitalization or death in the immediate family (in which you must attend the funeral) or other situations of similar gravity. Absences due to other meaningful conflicts, such as job interviews, family celebrations, travel difficulties, student misunderstandings or personal convenience, will not be excused. Students who will be absent from a major exam must notify the Dean’s Office prior to that exam. Absences from class due to the observance of a religious holiday will normally be excused. Individual students who will have to miss class to observe a religious holiday should notify the instructor by the end of the Add/Drop period to make prior arrangements for making up any work that will be missed. The final exam period runs until August 4.
As stated in the university catalog, any student who commits an act of academic dishonesty will receive a failing grade on the work in which the dishonesty occurred. In addition, acts of academic dishonesty, irrespective of the weight of the assignment, may result in the student receiving a failing grade in the course. Instances of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Academic Affairs. A student who is reported twice for academic dishonesty is subject to summary dismissal from the University. In such a case, the Academic Council will then make a recommendation to the President, who will make the final decision.
