-ASSESSMENT METHODS:
Assignment | Guidelines | Weight |
Final exam: research essay | A research essay of 2500 words to be submitted at the end of the course, on a topic of your own choosing from the syllabus, but previously agreed with me. The deadline for setting the research question and for the submission of the essay will be communicated in class. Begin the process of thinking as early as possible! The essay will have a title, an abstract that summarizes the main issue/problem identified by the student and presents the argument of the essay, references in text or in footnotes, and the bibliography. The bibliography and the footnotes are not included in the word count. An excellent essay will: identify a research question; formulate a convincing argument; will discuss theoretical positions relevant to that argument; will back the argument with empirical evidence; will cite correctly and will draw on relevant/significant sources. The argument will be well- organized and written as clearly as possible. Don't be intimidated by the requirements, this is only the beginning of a long process of learning so no one will ask from you more than can be expected at this stage of your university degree. | 35% |
Mid term exam | Exam questions from the first and second parts of the module. | 30% |
Two class assignments | Instructions will be handed out in class. | 20% |
Attendence and Participation | Attendance and participation to discussions are mandatory for this class. The goal here is to advance toward the art of asking good questions and providing thoughtful answers. Quality, not quantity of participation is what counts, although some quantity is better than no quality. | 15% |

ACADEMIC HONESTY
As stated in the university catalog, any student who commits an act of academic
dishonesty will receive a failing grade on the work in which the dishonesty occurred.
In addition, acts of academic dishonesty, irrespective of the weight of the assignment,
may result in the student receiving a failing grade in the course. Instances of
academic dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Academic Affairs. A student
who is reported twice for academic dishonesty is subject to summary dismissal from
the University. In such a case, the Academic Council will then make a recommendation
to the President, who will make the final decision.
