An introduction to the study of American foreign policy. After a brief historical overview emphasizing enduring themes of U.S. foreign policy, the course focuses on the U.S. policy-making process and examines the impact of intragovernmental rivalries, the Congress, interest groups, public opinion, and the media on the substance of America’s foreign policy. We will then explore the challenges to creating a comprehensive foreign policy for the 21st century: the dangers of nuclear proliferation, the U.S. response to humanitarian emergencies, and the rise of China, among others.
