“For my part I have sought liberty more than power, and power only because it can lead to freedom."

(Marguerite Yourcenar, Memoirs of Hadrian)

This day trip is not just a day trip. It is a combination of grandiose and inspiring places and historical figures, which charm and beauty never fades. Bring a notebook with you, or a canvas if you like painting, as we will give space to expressing your passions while admiring Art.

It is said that Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli bears witness to the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Today it is one of the best kept and most visited archaeological sites in Italy also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
The villa was built by Roman Emperor Hadrian at the foot of the Tiburtine Hills between 118 and 138 AD. The vast residential complex extended over an area of about 120 hectares (about 300 acres) and looked very much like an ancient Roman city. The site included buildings, baths, temples, barracks, theatres, gardens, fountains and nymphaeums. Some parts were explicitly commissioned by Hadrian to represent the empire's many provinces that he had visited himself.

Villa d'Este was commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, in 1550 the governor of Tivoli. The garden at Villa d’Este is of particular splendour and was designed by artist and architect Pirro Ligorio, and completed by Alberto Galvani. The rooms of the Villa were decorated and completely finished while the Cardinal was on his deathbed (1572). Beginning in 1605, Alessandro d’Este commissioned a phase of restoration: repairs in the garden and to the water installations, a new garden arrangement, and improvements to the fountains.  More renovations took place between 1660 and 1670, involving Gianlorenzo Bernini. The villa is certainly an example of refinement and grace.
