The ancient outdoor arena of the Baths of Caracalla (Terme di Caracalla) in Rome provides the perfect setting for the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma’s performance of the world famous Carmen by French composer Georges Bizet.

This opera, first performed in 1875, was scandalous for the era because of the overt sexuality and violence of the female lead, Carmen. In fact, the opera was not well received which sent Bizet into a deep depression. The music of the opera has been praised for its accurate reflection on the characters’ suffering and perhaps reflects the suffering of the composer. Bizet was constantly ill from a young age and died shortly after the premier of Carmen at the age of 36.

The story takes place in Seville, Spain, and contains Spanish flair and passion as Carmen seduces and manipulates the men around her in order to achieve her desired result. Carmen’s conniving and scheming leads to her bloody end.
